The Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Hong Kong is a leading academic unit dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation in the field of mechanical engineering. Our department offers comprehensive undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that encompass core areas such as robotics engineering, aerospace engineering, energy and sustainability, materials and manufacturing.
We are committed to fostering stimulating research environment that addresses real-world challenges. With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and industry engagement, our department prepares students to become innovative engineers and researchers who can contribute to technological advancement and societal development. Supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, HKU Mechanical Engineering is dedicated to nurturing future leaders in engineering and technology.
Students will study core areas of mechanical engineering, including engineering mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, materials science, control systems, manufacturing processes, and mechanical design. They will apply theoretical knowledge through laboratory work, computer-aided design, simulation, and project-based learning. Students will have the option to specialise in one of four focus areas: robotics engineering, aerospace engineering, energy and sustainability, and materials and manufacturing. In the later stages of the programme, they will take advanced courses and complete design or research projects. These experiences will help students develop strong analytical, technical, communication, and teamwork skills for professional engineering practice.
The programme enables students to develop solid foundations in engineering through active learning, capstone experience, hands-on activities, internship and exchanges studies. Students also have the chance to participate in experiential learning activities in the form of local and international competitions like the AIAA Design/Build/Fly Competition , Formula Student UK, Formula SAE China and Robocon competition.

Graduates are prepared to pursue various career paths, including research and development, manufacturing, design, and consulting. They may also choose to pursue further education, such as a master’s or doctoral degree, to specialize in a particular area of mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is a growing field with excellent career prospects. Graduates can work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and energy, as well as in emerging fields like nanotechnology, robotics, and renewable energy. The demand for mechanical engineers is high and expected to grow in the coming years. Some graduates may choose to work in non-engineering sectors such as business, education, social and community.

“HKU Engineering fuelled my growth through global exposure and strong academic support”

“The team gave their all in both training and competition. A defining moment came when technical issues surfaced right before a match; the team worked through the night to resolve them and completed final adjustments at the last minute. That unwavering spirit was the greatest reward!”
